The one that surprises everyone
Of everything above, the fact that consistently changes how people treat their birds is the face recognition one. A chicken is not a walking appetite — she knows who you are, remembers whether previous encounters went well, and behaves accordingly.
This is why the hen you hand-fed as a chick follows you around the garden while her sister keeps her distance, and why the flock reacts differently to a stranger. It's also why the mealworm bag works so reliably as a recall signal: you have trained them, and they remember specifically that you are the one holding it.
None of which makes them geniuses. A chicken will still walk into a wall it has walked into every day for a year. But there is more going on in there than the reputation suggests.
