About the Easter Egger

Not a breed — a beautiful mutt carrying the blue-egg gene. Every hen lays one color for her whole life, and you don't find out which until she starts. Blue? Green? Pink-ish? Roll the dice. Hardy, friendly, and no two birds look alike.

Cold and heat tolerance

Easter Eggers are mixed birds, so cold tolerance varies, but most carry a small pea comb and thick feathering and do well in northern winters. A dry, ventilated coop is the main requirement, and most hens keep laying through the cold months.

Heat tolerance is also good. Many are lightly built, so shade and cool water are enough in the South once temperatures pass 90 °F. Because each bird is different, watch her for panting or drooping wings and adjust.

Eggs and laying

Every Easter Egger lays one color for life, but you will not know which until she starts at around 20–24 weeks. Blue, green, olive, cream and pinkish eggs are all possible, and you may get a mix in the same flock. Expect roughly 200–250 medium to large eggs a year. They are not a pure breed, so egg color cannot be guaranteed.

Temperament and care

Friendly and curious, Easter Eggers are among the most popular backyard birds, and most are good with children. They vary in color, size and personality because they are a mix. Buy from a reputable source, and remember that sexing is not perfect, so a few cockerels can slip through.

Who they're for

a rainbow in the egg basket, an egg machine — output is the whole point, great with kids and visitors who want to pet something. Every flock is a sitcom cast — the Easter Egger is the surprise party.
